Food for Joy

Food is a very important element of life. Not only it provides the nutrients to give us energy for all functions of our body, but it gives us much pleasure when we are sharing it with others.  

In Cambodia, meals are shared and we always eat together. Although not all families could afford to put plenty of food on the table, but the joy and happiness of eating remains regardless how much they have to share. ​

Whilst we are volunteering our effort and time here to rebuild the classroom, we decided to share meals at the school with everyone involved. We are sharing the ‘Food for Joy’!  

To make this happen, I have the privilege to work with ‘Ma Kongnov’ a local Khmer lady for ‘Lunch Duty’. This is her first time cooking together with a foreigner and for foreigners. 

After a brief talk, we took a Tuk Tuk to the near by local market where everyone goes every morning to get their fresh produce. Not many families have refrigerators at home here, so they need to buy fresh everyday. 

This market sells anything you can think of! Actually even things that you can’t think of including the entire pig head, medical services, re-gas your empty gas bottles etc. 

I am not a huge meat eater and it does take some adjustment to get used to seeing all the fresh meat on the seller’s table. 

On the other hand, the vegetables available here are just amazing! The variety, colour, freshness and price are all shockingly good. Plenty to choose from. 

Today menu was: fried morning glory with garlic, omelet with spring onion and one of my favourite papaya soup with chicken. 

Mission of PeopleStories is to share greater access to knowledge. By working with Ma Kongnov, not only she gets to learn some of the eating preferences of ours as foreigners but I learned a lot from her about the local cooking and eating custom.
