Bottom Up For Strength

Today, I started volunteering for the new classroom construction at Chea Smonn School in rural Cambodia. 

I have no idea what to do nor have any experience in construction. But the master builders Mr Ny and Mr Nian were supervising our effort nicely... so I was an assistant brick layer, woohoo!

When I was looking at the ground and appreciating all the effort going into the building’s foundation, I realise how important it is to have a strong ‘bottom up’ approach. 

A strong foundation is to hold all the weight above.  It is imperative for the survival of the entire building and safety of the people who will be in it. Not only that, it also supports the structure for all walls, floors, windows, doors, furnitures, fans, underground plumbing etc. 

Bottom up is for strength!

If I use this ‘bottom up’ concept and applies to our non-profit work, I can see lots of similarities...

Our work isn’t about handing over money to the communities to make them richer and get them out of the poverty cycle, nor it is about going into a classroom to teach and play with the kids for a day or two. It isn’t even about giving the many pencils and notebooks to the underprivileged students and have a few happy snapshots. 

Our mission is to help the communities to build a strong foundation for change!  We are empowering them with the knowledge so that they can create and shape their own future stories. 

I love my work!  I am grateful to have the opportunity to align my passion to my purpose.
