It may be hard to believe but gender bias, gender inequality still exists in 2022. In many cultures male dominance is very much the norm. Thankfully there are people out there doing hard work at trying to change this outdated social status. In 2021, men and women from Cambodia’s Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport (MOEYS) participated in training to discuss gender equity and solutions to help close the gender divide in society.
Teacher Tip from our local team started training girl players from Phum Ou primary school, getting them prepared for the football tournament. Tip shared that this was his first experience in establishing a girl football team and his observations of the girls, many playing football for the first time, said, “Some of the girls look so excited and some extremely focused.” It is Tip’s hope that the boys and girls will be happy and enjoy the tournament.
In the 2021 training MOEYS attendees participated in, Cambodia’s Director of the Policy Department, Ms. Bo Chankoulika said, “I would like to see a time when factors such as poverty, cultural beliefs and gender never prevent girls from obtaining quality education at all levels. The education system will ensure girls can achieve their fullest potential and fulfill their hopes and dreams.”

“All work and no play” is detrimental to the work we do here at PeopleStories Foundation. We place great value in playing and have ensured that every single member of our family- from the children we help to the volunteers who help us- get a chance to play.  Game for life For our volunteers, helping underprivileged children attain a chance at lifelong learning takes up a lot of energy. For the children themselves, breaking out of the cycle of poverty also involves a lot of hard work. Therefore, we always ensure that our volunteers and children remain active so they have the strength to do what they must to create the change that they need. Part of the education curriculum we plan for the children includes sports programs. We teach the children how to play soccer, we invigorate them with dance classes, and we also hold Talent Game Shows for them to show off their athletic skills.
The future is playful
The importance of play cannot be understated. We have plans to beef up our sports curriculum in the schools with specialised sports for women, more inclusive sports for the handicapable, and many others. The success of our plan to play, like everything else we do to help these children, lies on the hands of our donors, sponsors and volunteers.
