People of Siem Reap

In 2017, I embarked on my volunteering experiences in Laos, Thailand and Cambodia.

Along my journey, I have encountered many beautiful people and learned about their stories.

People of Siem Reap is my debut project of PeopleStories.

Having the courage to stand on own feet

"My mother died when I was 6 years old and her passing was a bit of a mystery.  I heard that the day before she passed away, she wore a wedding dress and had her pictures taken by herself at a photography studio.  I was told she died from
illness, but I am not sure if it is true or not.  Anyway, my brother and I moved to live with my Grandmother not long after that because my father got remarried.   Unfortunately, my Grandmother passed away and we had to move again to live with our Uncle and Aunty.  After a few years, I decided to move out and live on my own.  At that time, all I had were only $20 and a phone!  I spent 7 hours on a bus and finally arrived in Siem Reap city.  I worked at a guest house and learned English from speaking with tourists.  I managed to finish High School but had to pay money to my teachers for extra lessons after school. After High School, I started working as a waiter since 2014.   I am now a Captain at a hotel restaurant and I am proud of it!  I like my job and always keep a smile on my face as I would like to make the tourists feel home when they are in my country.   If I had lots of money, I would open up an orphanage or some kind of charity to look after the disabled.   My dream was to become a teacher as I want to help the young ones learning.   Now, my goal is to become a restaurant manager in the near future."
