People of Siem Reap

In 2017, I embarked on my volunteering experiences in Laos, Thailand and Cambodia.

Along my journey, I have encountered many beautiful people and learned about their stories.

People of Siem Reap is my debut project of PeopleStories.

Education is power!

"I am a director of a non-profit community learning centre which has 3 classrooms and around 200 students.  Recently, we built a new library and I hope this can help people of my village to read and gain more skills.  Actually, I started teaching a
few young children from home in 2006. We didn't even have proper desks or chairs for students.  My dream has always been teaching and I am happy that I can help others in my village.  Personally, my path of learning hasn't been that easy ...  I had to stop going to school at grade 8 as my family was poor.  My parents got separated as my father was an alcoholic and my mother took my sister and left.  So, I had to look after my father, cook for my younger brother and work at a construction site.  At that time, I was 19 and earned $1.10 a day.    Luckily the situation changed after a year or so and my mother returned.  At the age of 21, I became a temple boy as that was the only way to get educated.  I stayed at the temple until 26 years old and returned to my village.  I believe in education as it can help us to get a better future and develop our country.   Fortunately, I have been gaining sponsorship from various donors and built the learning centre for the people of my village.   Now my dream is to give happiness to my family and help students to have better future through education.  If I had lots of money, I would build a nice house for my family, run the learning centre independently and perhaps start a small business too.”
