Delivering Hope: A Conversation with Pheak

20/8/2025

In recent months, our world has witnessed heartbreak near the Thai-Cambodian border. Over 200,000 Cambodians have been displaced, and hundreds of schools have closed.

Thanks to your support, we have been able to provide 2 tons of rice, 432 boxes of milk, 150 bundles of school supplies to children and their families starting over in new villages.
Picture
During our mission to provide relief packages to refugees, we had the privilege of speaking with Pheak, an 11-year-old girl who shared her harrowing experience:

“One day, we were all in the classroom learning Khmer. Suddenly, there was a very loud explosion, and I knew our school had been bombed.”

Pheak escaped the border conflict alongside her mother. They traveled for a long time on a farming vehicle, having little time to gather their belongings, and eventually arrived at Rolous village in rural Siem Reap.
Picture
She continued, “All of us, the students, didn’t know what to do but to follow our teacher and run out of the classroom.”

“We were all hiding in nearby holes, hoping to evade any violence. Some of my friends cried a lot, and we were all very scared.”

Children are innocent and should not be subjected to violence.

Picture
Out of curiosity, Founder Victoria asked Pheak, “Now that you are living in our village and studying at a new school, would you like to return to your homeland?”

Without hesitation, she replied, “Yes! I miss my friends and my home. I would like to go back.” As Pheak recalled her friends and recent memories from the border, another young girl joined our conversation.

Pheak mentioned, “Sim Sim and I came from the same village, although we attended different schools. We didn’t arrive in this new village together, but we have found each other here.”

Sim Sim added, “We are good friends now 🧡.”

Love and compassion foster hope and resilience. We truly wish these girls, along with all innocent children, safety, well-being, and the continued opportunity to attend school.

I Aspire to Be Like Grandma Sengheang

20/8/2025

The ongoing border conflicts have devastated countless families - closing over 600 schools and displacing more than 200,000 Cambodians.

While delivering relief packages to refugee families, we met Grandma Sengheang, a 71-year-old caregiver who fled her village near the Thai-Cambodian border with her grandchildren.
Picture
Founder Victoria asked with curiosity and compassion, “Grandma Sengheang, where do you come from and are your grandchildren under your full care?”

Grandma Sengheang responded, “I am now 71 years old. I came from the border where there was a lot of bombing.”  She continued, “My son is a single parent in the army. I care for his children.”

Victoria asked, “We heard about the bombing at the border too.  When that happened, what did you do?”
In times of war, there are no winners, and it is often the children and the elderly who suffer the most.
Picture
Grandma recounted, “I don’t know many things. When the bombing began, I dug a hole in my yard. That’s where we hid, hoping to escape any danger.”

The situation escalated quickly, with fighter jets and drones overhead. Grandma realized she had to take her grandchildren and seek shelter and safety.  She said, “We had no time to pack. We walked for a long time and reached Siem Reap with just a few belongings.”

Grandma found refuge in a rural village called Chea Smonn, where she received a warm welcome and support from her fellow Cambodians.

Her grandchildren are now attending a local primary school. Although life has changed dramatically, at least they are safe and able to move forward.

Grandma Sengheang, you are an inspiration to many! Your story of strength, resilience, and gratitude will forever remain in my heart. 🧡

PeopleStories 2024 in Review

29/12/2024

As we approach the close of 2024, we at PeopleStories are filled with immense pride as we reflect on the transformative impact we’ve made in the lives of children in rural Cambodia.

This year has been one of remarkable achievements, growth, and life-changing moments for the children we support, and none of it would have been possible without the unwavering generosity of our supporters. With deep gratitude, we are excited to share a recap of our key activities throughout 2024, our financial performance, and our aspirations for the coming year.

A Year of Growth and Transformation in 20242024 has been a landmark year for PeopleStories, with significant growth in both our programs and our financial health. Our total income, including direct donations and other sources of revenue, reached $66,706, while our total expenditure amounted to $56,032. The positive financial balance not only ensured the sustainability of our current programs but also positioned us to reinvest in expanding our reach and deepening our impact in 2025. Thanks to your generous support, we have been able to maintain a surplus that will allow us to broaden our initiatives and continue transforming lives.

Here is a closer look at the key activities that defined our success in 2024:
1)School for Life - Expanding Scholarship Opportunities
One of our proudest accomplishments this year is the continued growth of our flagship program, School for Life, which provided scholarships to 180 children in 2024.

Since 2017, we have supported a total of 978 children, with the number of scholarships growing steadily from 21 in our inaugural year to 200 in the current academic year. This progress is a testament to the ongoing need for educational support in rural Cambodia and our commitment to fulfilling that need.

Thanks to the generosity of our donors, we are on track to offer an additional 50 scholarships by April 2025, further empowering children through access to quality education.

2)School for Life - Storytelling Competition
Creativity and self-expression are fundamental to the holistic development of children, and this year’s School for Life Storytelling Competition was a celebration of those qualities. The event provided children with a platform to showcase their storytelling talents, with each participant presenting unique and heartfelt stories. The enthusiasm and creativity displayed by the children were truly inspiring, and we extend our warmest congratulations to the competition winners. Our esteemed panel of judges, which included representatives from the Ministry of Education and other prominent organizations, was deeply impressed by the performances. Competitions like these help foster confidence and communication skills, encouraging children to find and use their voices in impactful ways.

3)School for Life - Annual Football TournamentEducation extends beyond the classroom, and at PeopleStories, we place great value on the physical and social development of children. Our annual football tournament, held at Phum Ou Primary School, was a highlight of the year, bringing together boys and girls for a day filled with fun, teamwork, and friendly competition. The excitement was infectious, with children showing not only their athletic prowess but also their enthusiasm for being part of a supportive and joyful community. Events like this underscore the importance of nurturing both the minds and bodies of children, and we look forward to continuing to promote physical fitness and camaraderie through sports.
4)Mobile Digital School - Expanding Access to E-Learning

Our Mobile Digital School (MDS) initiative has been a game-changer for education in rural Cambodia, and 2024 saw this program reach new heights. Over the course of the year, we delivered more than 15,000 digital learning hours to 780 children, bringing our total to over 37,000 hours for 1,800 children since the program’s inception in 2022. We were deeply honored to receive recognition from the District Ministry of Education for being the first organization to bring mobile digital learning to rural areas. In addition, our MDS initiative was awarded the prestigious Best E-Learning Project Award from LearnX, validating our commitment to using technology to bridge educational gaps and provide children with the tools they need to succeed in the modern world.

5)Strengthening Our Team
Our ability to deliver impactful programs hinges on the dedication of our team, and 2024 saw us welcome four passionate new members to the PeopleStories family. Tola joined us as Program Officer for the Mobile Digital School, while Chanthy came on board as the Program Manager for School for Life. Sreymey, who previously worked on our STEM for Girls initiative, has been promoted to Program Officer, and Chanreas, a former scholarship recipient, has joined us for work experience after completing high school. These new additions have strengthened our capacity to expand our programs and ensure that we continue to make a meaningful difference in the lives of the children we serve.
Looking Ahead to 2025As we move into 2025, we are excited to build on the successes of 2024 and set even more ambitious goals for the future. Here are some of the key initiatives we plan to pursue in the coming year:

1)Expanding Our Reach to New DistrictsIn 2025, we aim to extend our educational programs from one district to three districts in rural Siem Reap. This expansion will enable us to provide even more children with access to quality education, ensuring that they have the tools and resources they need to succeed in school and beyond.

2)Scaling the Mobile Digital School ProgramBuilding on the success of our Mobile Digital School, we plan to double our capacity by adding a second mobile unit in 2025. Our goal is to deliver 30,000 digital learning hours, reaching even more children with our innovative e-learning solutions. This expansion will continue to bridge the digital divide in rural Cambodia, equipping children with the critical skills needed for the future.

3)Supporting University EducationFor the first time, PeopleStories will begin sponsoring children to pursue university education. This represents a significant step forward in our mission to empower children through education, and we are eager to see our children pursue higher learning and achieve their academic and professional dreams.

4)Seeking New Grants and PartnershipsAs we expand our programs, we are actively seeking new grants and partnerships to help us reach more children and enhance our impact. We look forward to collaborating with like-minded organizations that share our commitment to education and community development.

A Heartfelt Thank You to Our Donors!  All of these accomplishments and future aspirations would not be possible without the generosity of our donors. Your contributions have made a direct and profound impact on the lives of hundreds of children, giving them the opportunity to learn, grow, and build brighter futures. We are incredibly grateful for your continued support and look forward to working together to create even more positive change in 2025.

Together, we are transforming lives, one child at a time.

An inspiring interview with Sreymey

29/12/2024

At PeopleStories, we are constantly inspired by the incredible journeys of the children we support. One such story is that of Sreymey, an 18-year-old girl whose perseverance, passion for education, and resilience in the face of personal challenges exemplify the values we aim to nurture. As she steps into 2025 with clear goals for her future, we are excited to share her journey with you in this newsletter.

Sreymey first joined the PeopleStories community in 2019 as a Grade 9 student.   In 2021, she was awarded the STEM4Girls scholarship, a pivotal moment that not only supported her education but also marked a significant turning point in her life.  At the time, she had recently lost her father, a devastating event that placed immense emotional and financial pressure on her family.  Despite these hardships, Sreymey remained determined to continue her education.

Over the past years, she has completed high school and started working full-time with PeopleStories, all while balancing her job with personal responsibilities and future aspirations.

Here is her inspiring story in her own words.

"My name is Sreymey, and I am proud to say that I am 18 years old. People often call me hardworking, though I don't always see myself that way. I know there’s always room for improvement. I first received a PeopleStories scholarship in 2019 when I was in Grade 9. My family was going through a really difficult time because we had just lost my father, who was an important figure in our lives. In January 2021, I received the STEM4Girls scholarship, which allowed me to move to Phnom Penh and live on my own. There were many challenges, but despite it all, I always tried to keep a smile on my face."

"After finishing high school, I felt a bit lost. However, PeopleStories gave me the opportunity to explore myself again. Now, as we head into 2025, I’m excited to continue my journey. I will be starting university soon, supported by scholarships from PeopleStories. I also work for PeopleStories that helps me earn an income to support my family, including my two younger siblings. I’m happy to help them in any way I can, even if I can’t give much yet."
Picture
The Interview -

1)How did the STEM4Girls program help you grow personally and professionally?

"The STEM4Girls program was truly life-changing. It opened up my world and gave me a broader perspective. Before joining, I wasn’t comfortable expressing myself, but that has changed. In January 2021, I moved to Phnom Penh with a friend to start a new chapter in my life. As a girl who had never left home before, it was challenging to adapt to a new environment. For three years, I lived in a dormitory with girls from diverse backgrounds and personalities. That experience shaped me in ways I never imagined."
"While studying at E2STEM Education Cambodia, I gained a lot of knowledge—not just academically, but in terms of life skills. I learned the importance of teamwork, which is crucial when entering the workforce. Being responsible and independent became second nature to me, and I now feel more confident in my abilities. I can see that many young people lack the confidence to take on challenges, but this program helped me build the courage and self-assurance I needed."

2)You’re now working full-time with PeopleStories. How does it feel, and have there been any memorable milestones this year?

"It feels very special to have come this far. I vividly remember a conversation I had with Vic (founder Victoria) when I was unsure about my future. I told her, "I don’t know what to do next. I want to take a gap year to explore myself, but I’m not sure what I’ll do during that year." Vic reassured me, saying, "It’s okay to feel lost sometimes, but you should keep as many options open as possible. Don’t limit yourself!" She also promised that PeopleStories would create a work experience program for me to join, which they did."
"I started as a trainee in the Elevate Work Experience program for 12 months, but after five months, I was offered a full-time position as a Learning & Administration Officer. The most memorable milestone this year has been that I never considered giving up, even when things got tough. Working full-time requires a lot of energy, and while there were times I felt exhausted, I always found the strength to continue. I completed my year of work experience, and I’m incredibly grateful to PeopleStories for this opportunity."

3)You initially wanted to become a teacher but have since developed a passion for banking and finance. What inspired this change?
Picture
"Growing up, I wanted to be a teacher because my family holds teachers in high regard. In my community, being a teacher is often seen as one of the best career options, so I didn’t really explore other paths. After high school, I even took the teacher training exam several times but didn’t pass."

"During my work experience with PeopleStories, I coached children and realized that teaching wasn’t the right fit for me. I started taking on various tasks in the office, and what really excited me was finance. I enjoyed solving problems and felt energized by the challenge. I could sit in meetings for hours discussing strategies and was always eager to contribute ideas, even if they weren’t perfect. That’s when I knew I wanted to pursue a career in finance."
Picture
4)What advice would you give to other girls in your community?

"My advice is simple: if you don’t know what to do next, don’t be afraid to ask for help. There are so many people who are willing to offer guidance, but you won’t find them unless you reach out. Communication is key, and it used to be a weakness of mine. But now, I understand how important it is. If you have a good idea but don’t know how to express it, it will go to waste. So speak up, and don’t judge yourself too harshly. If others judge you, that’s their issue, not yours."

5)What are your personal goals for 2025?

"I have a few important goals for 2025:
  • University: I’ve received a scholarship from PeopleStories and I want to perform well to prove that I deserve these opportunities.
  • Career/Work: I plan to continue working part-time with PeopleStories while studying. I believe in the value of practical experience, so I want to apply what I learn in school to real-life work situations.
  • Work Life Balance: I know I’ll be busier, but I aim to maintain a balance between my studies, work, family, friends, and personal time."
A Final Word from PeopleStories -

We are incredibly proud of Sreymey and all that she has accomplished. Her journey from a young girl facing hardship to a confident, determined young woman serves as a testament to the power of education and resilience.

At PeopleStories, we believe that education can change lives, and Sreymey’s story is a shining example of that transformation. We look forward to seeing all the wonderful things she will achieve in 2025 and beyond!

Celebrating the Best e-Learning Project Award : A Collective Achievement in Transforming Education in Rural Cambodia

We are thrilled to announce PeopleStories Mobile Digital School (MDS) was recognized with the Best e-Learning Project award at a distinguished ceremony hosted by LearnX Award, a leading Australian international awards program that celebrates excellence and innovation in learning, development, and talent management.

This recognition is not just a testament to the impact MDS has made but also a celebration of the incredible collaboration and support from everyone involved - from our passionate sponsor Lloyd’s of London to the children who have participated or completed the course. This award underscores the collective effort of our entire community, and we are deeply grateful for everyone’s contribution toward making this innovative project a success.
About the LearnX Award

The LearnX Awards, organized by the LearnX Foundation, recognize innovative projects in learning, technology, and development across the globe. The awards celebrate organizations and individuals that are transforming learning and development, making a difference in their communities, and pioneering new approaches to education and training. For PeopleStories to be recognized alongside such cutting-edge initiatives is an honour, and it highlights the global importance of the work we are doing in Cambodia.
Picture
A Journey of Transformation: From Chalk & Talk to Flick & Click

PeopleStories began its mission to transform education in rural Cambodia in 2017. Founded by Victoria Miloschewsky, our purpose has always been clear - provide children in rural areas the education they deserve, empowering them to dream and create better futures for themselves. From scholarships, bicycles, and school facilities to teacher training programs, PeopleStories has consistently focused on holistic support for education in Cambodia.

But as the world changed rapidly during the pandemic, so did the needs of the education sector. The global health crisis exposed significant gaps in education, particularly in Cambodia, where 3.2 million learners were affected, and around 70% had no access to online learning resources. This was a wake-up call for both educators and organizations like PeopleStories, propelling us to take action and develop a solution tailored to the local context.
Picture
Thus, the Mobile Digital School was born - a program designed to bridge the education gap in rural Cambodia, where traditional teaching methods (“Chalk & Talk”) were still prevalent, and digital resources were scarce. Through this course, PeopleStories has been able to introduce children to an entirely new way of learning, transforming their experience from passive listeners to active participants in a “Flick & Click” learning environment, equipped with digital and vocational skills that can change the course of their futures.
The Mobile Digital School: A New Way of Learning

At the heart of the Mobile Digital School is accessibility and inclusivity. In collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Youth & Sports in Cambodia, PeopleStories launched a “School-On-Wheels” in 2022. This innovative mobile classroom is equipped with digital learning tools that travel to rural schools in the Bakong district of Siem Reap, bringing quality education directly to the children who need it most.

This initiative targets not just academic learning but also vocational skills, essential for the students’ long-term success. Children are introduced to technology, creative problem-solving, and life skills that enable them to dream bigger and more confidently. More than just a mobile classroom, the course represents a future where Cambodian children can keep pace with their global peers, gain access to a world of information, and take control of their educational journey.

Our partnership with the Ministry of Education, Youth & Sports has been crucial to the success of this project. The shared vision between PeopleStories and the ministry is clear: both organizations are committed to providing every child the opportunity to learn and grow, regardless of their socio-economic background. As Mr. Tann Reangsey, Director of the Ministry in Bakong district, pointed out, “This partnership has thrived on open communication and a shared commitment to the children’s future.”
A Collective Effort: Celebrating Everyone Involved

This recognition from the LearnX Award wouldn’t be possible without the relentless efforts of so many people.

The Children: Finally, we celebrate the children who have participated in the Mobile Digital School course. Your enthusiasm for learning and your courage in embracing new technology are what make this project meaningful. The skills you are gaining today will open doors for you tomorrow, and we are so proud of your achievements.
Picture
Our Donors: Every donation, whether large or small, has contributed to bringing the Mobile Digital School to life.  Full gratitude to Lloyd’s of London who has entrusted us with their charity grants since the inception of our Mobile Digital School.  Every dollar has directly impacted the lives of children in rural Cambodia, and for that, we extend our deepest gratitude.

The Teachers and Volunteers: You have been the backbone of this project, ensuring that the children receive not just the tools but the guidance they need to make the most of their education. Whether through digital literacy training, mentoring, or simply encouraging the children to stay curious and engaged, your work has laid the foundation for the course’s success.

Looking Ahead: Expanding the Reach of Mobile Digital School
While the award from LearnX is a momentous occasion, it also motivates us to continue pushing the boundaries of what’s possible. The success of the Mobile Digital School course in the Bakong district has opened up conversations about expanding this initiative to other rural areas in Cambodia.  Our goal is to reach even more children with this transformative education model, empowering them with the skills they need to navigate an increasingly digital world.

Additionally, this project has shown us the importance of adaptability in education. By integrating digital tools and life-skills training, we are not only providing children with academic knowledge but also preparing them for real-world challenges. As we move forward, we aim to refine the Mobile Digital School course further, making it even more effective, engaging, and accessible to children in remote areas.
Picture
A Final Word of Thanks

We want to take this moment to sincerely thank each and every individual who has contributed to the success of this course. From the volunteers who spent countless hours developing and refining the curriculum to the donors who believed in the vision and provided the resources to make it a reality, your contributions have been invaluable.

This Best e-Learning Project Award is not just a recognition of our course - it’s a celebration of what we can achieve when we come together for a shared purpose. The Mobile Digital School has the potential to change lives, and with your continued support, we can extend its reach and impact even more children in rural Cambodia.

Together, we are not just building a school on wheels. We are building futures.

Thank you for being part of this incredible journey.

Celebrating 7 Years of PeopleStories

Celebrating 7 Years of PeopleStories: Transforming Lives Through Education
November 6 marks a significant milestone for PeopleStories as we celebrate our 7th anniversary. Over the past seven years, we have been committed to empowering children in rural Cambodia by providing them with access to quality education and life-changing opportunities. This anniversary is not just a celebration of our development work but a tribute to the incredible community of supporters, volunteers, and educators who have made this journey possible.

A Journey of Transformation
Founded in 2017 by Victoria Miloschewsky, PeopleStories started with a simple yet profound vision: to empower children through education and help them achieve their dreams. What began as a project capturing the stories of children and families in rural Cambodia has grown into a dynamic development agency supporting thousands of children across the many rural villages.

Through our efforts, we have provided scholarships, school infrastructure, bicycles, and learning materials, ensuring that education is not just a dream but a reality for these children. Over 3,000 children across 13 schools have benefited from our programs, with the dropout rate among scholarship recipients reduced to less than 5% - a significant achievement in a country where the average dropout rate hovers around 20%.
Picture
School Infrastructure and Facilities: We have helped build classrooms, provide clean water, and improve learning environments in rural schools, ensuring children have the resources they need to succeed.

Bicycle Donations: For many children, the lack of transportation is a barrier to education. Our bicycle donation program has provided hundreds of students with a means to travel to school, reducing dropout rates.
Digital and Life-Skill Learning: The introduction of the Mobile Digital School has transformed traditional teaching methods by bringing digital learning and life-skills to rural Cambodia, equipping children with the tools they need for the future.

Our Key Initiatives
In the last seven years, PeopleStories has implemented a variety of impactful programs designed to break the cycle of poverty through education:

School for Life Scholarship: Close to 1,000 of children have been supported with scholarships, giving them the chance to continue their education and strive for a brighter future.
A Community Effort
The success of PeopleStories over these seven years is a testament to the power of community. We are deeply grateful to Lloyd’s of London for their generous donations, dedicated volunteers, and passionate supporters who have contributed time, wealth, resources, and expertise to make these initiatives a reality. Every donation, no matter how small, has played a vital role in changing the lives of these children.
Looking Forward
As we celebrate seven incredible years, we also look forward to the future. Our mission remains as strong as ever: to continue empowering children through education and to reach even more schools and communities in Cambodia. With your continued support, we can expand our programs and ensure that even more children can dream big and pursue their aspirations.

Join Us in Celebrating
As we mark this milestone, we invite you to be part of the next chapter of PeopleStories. Help us continue transforming lives through education by donating, volunteering, or simply sharing our mission. Together, we can empower the next generation of Cambodian children to achieve their dreams.

Starting a new career

24/5/2024

For many, what comes after graduating school is quite clear and attainable.  For the children in rural Cambodia, the path is not always clear. Quality education is not a given in these rural villages. With high dropout rates and families not having money or transportation to send their children to school, the future is often uncertain and scary.

As our children and community grow, Peoplestories is growing too.  We are right there on the ground, helping many deserving children access quality education. There are success stories along with a lot of work still to be done.

SreyMey and Tola, who have both recently graduated from school (high school and university), have just completed their 3-month PeopleStories Elevate Work Experience program!  ‘Elevate’ is designed to offer hands-on work experience and further learning and development opportunities to young people who are yet to have a taste of professional working life.
Picture
I was very excited to learn more from Tola and SreyMey and how they feel about this wonderful opportunity and what they’re learning since being selected into the program.

Tola couldn’t wait to share his experience up to this point and said, “The Elevate Work Experience program has truly been a transformative journey for me. It’s more than just a program to me; it is a springboard for personal and professional growth.”  Tola jumped right in and in addition to being exposed to technical and soft skills development he further explained, “This program also immerses participants in real-world projects, providing hands-on experiences that can’t be replicated in a classroom setting.’
SreyMey shared with me how she learned about the Elevate Work Experience Program saying, “I was about to graduate high school and at that time I was so confused, and had no specific goals. Victoria introduced me to this program in PeopleStories and I was so interested as I always believe that working will let me learn more skills.”  SreyMey continued, “I also wanted to give back to the community and PeopleStories as I feel so grateful to have gotten support from them for four years of my education.”

Tola also learned about the program from Victoria, saying, “Victoria shared her positive experience with the program and highlighted its emphasis on skill development and hands-on experience and it immediately piqued my interest. With Vic’s recommendations and my own research about this opportunity, my decision to pursue it was solidified.”
There are so many lessons to be learned in our experiences and the same is true for Tola and SreyMey. The Elevate program is giving SreyMey a big lesson in communication and she shared, “No matter how good you are, if you can’t communicate well you will have difficulties during work and this is a skill I need to work on pretty hard.”

Tola reflecting on his Elevate journey thus far, explained, “One of the most profound lessons I’ve learned is the importance of embracing change and uncertainty. Adaptability is not just a desirable trait; it’s a necessity. He thoughtfully continued, “I’m learning that setbacks are not roadblocks but rather opportunities for growth and innovation.”
Picture
The congratulations don’t end there for Tola and SreyMey!    They now have earned permanent roles with PeopleStories!

Tola was overwhelmed with the news of being appointed as our Program Officer for Mobile Digital School, sharing, “It was a culmination of months of hard work, dedication, and perseverance. I felt so many emotions - joy, pride, gratitude, and even a hint of nervousness.” Knowing that his contributions during the Elevate program had been recognized and valued enough to warrant a permanent position with PeopleStories had Tola feeling proud and he said, “It instilled in me a renewed sense of purpose and commitment to making a positive impact in my new role.”

SreyMey is equally proud of her new role with PeopleStories as a Learning and Administration officer and she said, “After three months of Elevate work experience, I found myself enjoying going to class and I love to do administration work so I am so happy to get this role. I hope to work along with the team for continuous learning and development.”
Picture
The idea that education has the power to uplift individuals and entire communities resonates strongly with Tola as he explained his decision to take on this permanent role with PeopleStories, “Joining PeopleStories isn’t just about advancing my career; it’s about being part of a movement toward positive social change.”

He continued, “By contributing to programs like Mobile Digital School, I feel I can make a difference in the lives of those who need it most.”

Learning new skills, having new experiences, and working in different roles can certainly bring on changes to goals and dreams and as SreyMey explained how she was a little bit lost about her future she thinks this new role with PeopleStories will be a very good thing and she shared, “I hope this new role will lead me to find my dreams again. I wanted to be a teacher and now I have a role as a Learning Officer. They are so related to each other, so I hope this role can help me be sure if I still want to be a teacher or not.”

Tola feels his new role will also help him realize his goal. He explained, “My goal remains the same - to make a meaningful and lasting impact in the field of education and technology.” He continued, “With this new role at PeopleStories, I am one step closer to realizing those dreams. A future where education is accessible to all, regardless of background or circumstance.”

SreyMey and Tola are very focused and taking advantage of the opportunities their hard work is offering them. I look forward to following them along their continued education journey and watching them make their dreams come true.

Congratulations SreyMey and Tola!!!

In the heart of rural Cambodia, the journey to effective student support is an inspiring testament to perseverance and dedication. At PeopleStories, we are committed to a comprehensive approach, collecting detailed information on children school performance each semester. By working closely with local authorities and schools, we gain invaluable insights beyond mere numbers. These insights help us understand each child's unique needs, enabling us to offer targeted interventions like home visits that address academic concerns, broader socio-economic challenges and celebrate achievements.
Overcoming Challenges to Achieve Results - Conducting home visits in rural areas is no small feat, as Teacher Sarith can attest. “The challenges I encounter during home visits are numerous,” he explains. “Riding my motorbike through different villages, dealing with barking dogs, waiting for parents to come home, crossing unstable wooden bridges, and climbing up to high houses in floating villages like Kompong Phluk.”

Despite these obstacles, Sarith has developed strategies to overcome them. “Patience and calmness are key,” he says.

Making a Tangible Impact on Children Well-being - The tangible outcomes of these efforts are profound. “I’ve noticed that most students show better study results and improved attendance after the home visits,” Sarith notes.

This improvement reflects our holistic approach, addressing educational needs and emotional and socio-economic factors. The positive changes in children school performance and attendance underscore the effectiveness of our support system, which prioritizes each child's well-being.

Sarith continues, "Furthermore, we also celebrate improvements made by the children and those are top performers in their class.  The recognition is done in front of the family and what a proud moment we share!"

Sustaining Motivation for Excellence - For educators like Sarith, witnessing children’s academic achievements fuels their commitment. “What motivates me the most is seeing their strong commitment to their future dreams,” he shares.

“When I congratulate them on their achievements, they always thank me quickly, which makes me feel very happy and excited to celebrate with them and their families.”
Memorable Moments and Deep Connections - Teacher Sarith recalls a particularly touching home visit. “There was one family where both parents were sick and unable to work, and their children were studying at school. Seeing their difficult situation made me feel deeply sorry for them, but I didn't know how to help because it seemed beyond my ability.” Such experiences highlight the profound challenges many families face and the deep empathy required in our work.

Witnessing the Impact - Despite the challenges, Sarith remains motivated. “I regard home visits as a chance to go sightseeing in the villages,” he says with a smile. “It’s our role to help our children, and I stay motivated by seeing the direct impact of my efforts on their academic performance and motivation to succeed.”
Creating Lasting Change - In April 2024, PeopleStories volunteer Jacy led a transformative training session in Siem Reap, emphasizing meaningful interactions with the local team. She has been a volunteer since 2019 and has supported home visits with a guide she has developed.

Jacy’s training sessions play a crucial role in empowering our local team to connect more deeply with students and their families. “It’s important to make every interaction count,” Jacy reflects.

“I shared the importance of 'check-ins' and 'warm-ups' and discussed creating a safe haven where children can express themselves without fear of judgment.”

Her impact has been profound. "Our local team's communication skills have vastly improved," she observes. "Children now view us as a support system for school-related matters." This trust-building has translated into better attendance and literacy rates among the younger generations.

Collective Efforts for a Brighter Future - PeopleStories’ work in Cambodia demonstrates how collective efforts and strong partnerships drive lasting change. “Gaining permission is paramount,” Jacy emphasizes. “It goes beyond formality—it’s a sign of respect and trust-building. Whether it’s separating parent-child sessions or sharing information for joint sessions, seeking permission lays the groundwork for a supportive relationship.”

With thorough assessments, resilience in overcoming challenges, measurable impacts, sustained motivation, and collaborative empowerment, PeopleStories creates a powerful blueprint for effective educational support.

By addressing both academic and socio-economic factors, this holistic model not only improves academic outcomes but also enhances the overall well-being of students. Together, educators, volunteers, and communities are paving the way for a brighter future for the younger generation in rural Cambodia.

Critical Thinking course has landed

In the heart of rural Cambodia, where opportunity often feels like a distant dream, a beacon of change emerges: the Critical Thinking course. Spearheaded by PeopleStories, this program seeks to equip children with the tools they need to navigate a complex world and seize control of their destinies. But behind every great initiative lies a team of dedicated individuals, each lending their expertise to shape the course's vision into reality.

Victoria, the founder of PeopleStories, stands at the helm of this transformative initiative. When asked about the development of the Critical Thinking course, she doesn't mince words. "Back in 2019," she begins, her voice resonating with purpose, "we conducted a Khmer Literacy Assessment with 400 children, it revealed a glaring gap in our children's education: while their memorization skills were commendable, their critical thinking abilities lagged behind."
This outcome sparked a fire within Victoria and her team, propelling them to action. "We knew we had to do something," Victoria declares. "And so, the Critical Thinking course was born—a 17-week program designed to instill essential problem-solving skills in our children. Each session offers activities aimed at bolstering critical thinking skills with a practical 'how-to' approach. Concepts such as '5-Why for identifying root causes' and 'Asking open-ended questions to explore options' are just a glimpse of what children will learn and practice."
Picture
Victoria is quick to acknowledge that she didn't embark on this journey alone. "I am proud to lead a team of over 30 volunteers from all over the world," she states. "From E-Learning Designers to Editors to Coaches, each member brings a unique skill set to the table, united by a shared commitment to empowering our children."

Among these dedicated individuals is Andreas (https://www.linkedin.com/in/andreas-fischer-sydney/), the brilliant E-Learning Designer whose expertise in instructional design has been instrumental in shaping the course's curriculum. When asked about the challenges he faced during the design process, Andreas doesn't shy away from the truth.
Picture
"One challenge we faced was accommodating the children's relatively low literacy levels," he explains. "To overcome this, we employed a variety of multimedia elements, including videos, audios, quizzes, and interactive games, to reinforce key concepts."

But perhaps the most daunting hurdle was the task of translating the course content from English to Khmer. "Text animations in videos presented a design challenge," Andreas admits. "But thanks to our team of talented translators, we were able to overcome this obstacle and ensure that the course remained accessible to all."
Roberta https://www.linkedin.com/in/roberta-thomson-a5777918/, the meticulous Editor, also played a crucial role in bringing the Critical Thinking course to life. When asked about the assessment methods used to measure students' critical thinking abilities, Roberta's response is direct and to the point.

"Children are assessed digitally through informal knowledge checks and group assignments," she states. "These assessments are designed to evaluate their understanding and application of key concepts, ensuring that they are equipped with the skills they need to succeed."
Yet, for Tola, the passionate Coach, the significance of the Critical Thinking course extends far beyond mere academics. "Critical thinking is the key to unlocking the potential of Cambodian children," he declares. "By fostering these skills, we are not only preparing them for future success but also empowering them to become adaptable problem-solvers."

Tola continues, "Our children have spoken!  Let's listen to what they to say after embraking on this incredible learning journey."
And so, as the Critical Thinking course takes root in the fertile soil of rural Cambodia, it heralds a new dawn of possibility—a testament to the power of education to transcend barriers and transform lives. Through the dedication of Victoria and her team, the seeds of change have been sown, promising to bear fruit for generations to come.

Pokim's Story

29/3/2024

I am Pokim, a young woman who hails from a humble background in rural Siem Reap. Growing up in poverty with two sisters, I witnessed the challenges my family faced, especially with my father's struggles with alcohol. Despite the hardships, I found solace in the unwavering support of my mother, who inspired me to persevere through the toughest times.

My journey with PeopleStories Charity began with their scholarships in 2018, which became my ticket to a better future. For six years, they supported my education, starting with secondary school and later granting me the opportunity to pursue a STEM for Girls scholarship for high school. Relocating to Phnom Penh opened doors to a high-quality tech school, where I dedicated myself to my studies and achieved a proud "B" grade in the national examination.

Throughout this journey, the support of my mother has been my guiding light. Her resilience and hard work taught me the importance of perseverance and positivity. She believed in me when I doubted myself, encouraging me to chase my dreams fearlessly.

As a young woman, my aspirations are rooted in empowerment and leadership. I dream of a future where I can inspire others, especially women, to break barriers and strive for greatness. Reflecting on International Women’s Day, I see progress in my university's efforts to promote gender equality, particularly through programs like coding and programming scholarships aimed at empowering women.
Looking ahead, my wish for all women in Cambodia is simple yet profound: greater gender equality and freedom from fear and exploitation. Through my own experiences, I've learned the importance of resilience and adaptability. Every challenge I've faced has taught me valuable lessons, making me stronger and more determined to succeed.

I owe a debt of gratitude to Oliver Miloschewsky and PeopleStories Charity for their unwavering support throughout my journey. Oliver's sponsorship has been a lifeline, enabling me to pursue my dreams and carve out a brighter future for myself.

As I continue my studies in Mathematics at a great university, I am filled with hope and determination. My journey is a testament to the transformative power of education and resilience. With each step forward, I am reminded that no dream is too big and no obstacle too daunting when faced with courage and determination. Together, we can create a world where every woman has the opportunity to thrive and succeed.
Oliver has sponsored Pokim’s education through PeopleStories School for Life program since 2018.  We got in touch with Oliver and he shared about his motivation in backing PeopleStories, “I always believed in helping others but sometimes it can be difficult to find the right and meaningful way to help and sponsor a young, deserving person. This is why I was so happy to see how direct and impactful PeopleStories’ program is! This made it a very easy decision to sponsor Pokim who is an amazing young lady and continues to surprise me with how far she has come. With just a little bit of meaningful help we can actually change lives for the better!”

After reading Pokim’s latest sharing, Oliver felt delighted and had this message for Pokim, “I am proud of you Pokim! I know that it is a tough journey to move away from your family to study in another city but you have successfully mastered this. At the same time you continue to grow as a kind and wonderful person. Find your own way to pursue your dreams, whether that’s career, family or otherwise. I sincerely wish that your dreams come true! Go after them and always remember to give back to others when you can. Together we can make this world a better place, one small little step at a time.”
